Visit Churches and Convents of Goa

Popular for its party and boozing culture, Goa has a completely opposite color to it too-- A color of history and religion. The state was once a colony of Portugal and thus became a center of some spectacular Roman Catholic Churches and chapels. Architectural marvels as they are, some of the churches have been declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO. One such example is the Basilica of Bom Jesus. The place is dedicated to baby Jesus and is a pilgrimage site for millions. This highly revered church still holds mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier in a silver casket which makes this place very unique. Another site which is truly a beauty to behold is Se Cathedral. The site took 80 years to come in existence and had two towers, one each site adorning its beauty. But unfortunately one tower got struck by lightning. The purpose of its construction was to mark the victory of King Alfonso. But, One site that will take you back in time is Church of St. Francis of Assisi. Its Corinthian style with a baroque touch will make you visit the times of 17th century when it was built. Do not forget to adore the wall painting inside the church dedicated to St. Francis Assisi. A very popular tourist attraction is Chapel of St. Catherine. The site is simple and yet very graceful. Laid by Portuguese Governor, the site marks the beginning of Portuguese rule in Goa.
