India for First Timers
India is many times rightfully referred to as a subcontinent, featuring diverse geographical, demographical and cultural
Located at the Coromandel coast with Bay of Bengal at its side, the quaint town of Mahabalipuram is marked by a beautiful coastal line and dotted with several architecture marvels. Also known as Mamallapuram, named after king Pallava meaning “The powerful” this city truly personifies its name. During the 6th century, Mahabalipuram also served as coastal port for international traders. Remnants of the fact can be witnessed in Lighthouse along the shoreline built during Pallava dynasty (6th century). The main attraction of the town is the intricately carved Shore temple, now the only left residue of the seven shore temples built across the shore line of India. It is the only temple in the world with deities of both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu in it. Carved out of a single stone, the deities are made from top to bottom unlike modern times. The quaint sandy beach of Mahabalipuram is a perfect place for a traveller who is looking for some quiet time near the sea-shores. Sprinkled with dreamy rock cut sculptures all across, the very sight of Mahabalipuram is bewitchingly beautiful. With a rocky outcropping in between the beach and lagoon, this beach paradise redefines the term of “Meditative retreat”. Pancha Ratha , Cave temples and Thirukadamalai temple are some other interesting sites not to be missed. The temples have carvings creating optical illusions and our tour guide included in our holiday packages for Mahabalipuram will take you through all of them explaining everything. The best time to visit the city is November and December as the shore temple holds various cultural dance events showcasing Indian culture and traditions. Book your trip to this ancient little town with our packages for Mahabalipuram
